We met with the surgeon yesterday and discussed the plans for getting a biopsy of the tumors in Stephens abdomen. The doctor is Tawnia Bowles. She is Oncological Surgeon. She said that the tumors are too difficult to get to for a laproscopic surgery. He will have to have the old fashioned type of surgery. We scheduled the surgery for tuesday the 13th of March. The doctor will do an insision just below his sternum that is 4-6 inches long. She plans to get one of the lymphnodes that is behind his stomach if possible. She said that they will just move around whatever they need to to get to the tumors(as long as it won’t cause any damage of course). His tumors are all behind the stomach and in front of and around his kidneys so they are right down the center of his core. They plan to run all kinds of tests on the tissue and see if they can figure out exactly what type of lymphoma it is. While he is asleep they are also going to take some bone marrow and see if the bone marrow is still clean. The doctor said she thinks he will handle the surgery well. He has 3 things going for him…youth, no previous surgery, and he is skinny. She said that those three things really help with surgery like this. She said that she normally only get’s to operate on young people when she is on call on the weekends and she has to do an apendectomy!
Stephen will have his surgery at IMC and will stay in the hospital 3 to 7 days depending on his pain levels and how quickly he bounces back.
The Stem Cell Transplant team from LDS hospital have also been in touch with her and will be checking in on his progress and pathology reports so they can continue to plan a transplant that would be most successful given his diagnosis.
I’ll try to post on Tuesday and report on how the operation went.
